The upper ridge breaks down Friday allowing a weak cold front to move through. The pre-frontal environment will be hot and dry with gusty winds at times. High- based thunderstorms are possible over northeastern Wyoming Thursday evening, which may contain dry lightning. Additional thunderstorms are possible Friday with little beneficial rainfall. Minimum relative humidities will drop to 9-15 percent Thursday afternoon and evening over northeastern Wyoming and western South Dakota. Poor relative humidity recovery is expected Wednesday night and Thursday night, especially for the Black Hills. Gusty southwest to southeast winds will develop, averaging 10 to 25 mph with gusts of 25 to 35 mph (strongest on the plains of northwestern South Dakota). Critical fire weather conditions are expected Thursday. At least elevated fire weather conditions are expected Friday east of the Black Hills, depending on the timing of the cold front. The National Weather Service in Rapid City has issued a Red Flag Warning for gusty winds...low relative humidity...and dry thunderstorms, which is in effect from noon to 11 PM MDT Thursday. The Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect. * AFFECTED AREA...Fire Weather Zones 314 Northern Campbell, 315 Southern Campbell, 316 Crook County Plains, 317 Weston County Plains and 318 Wyoming Black Hills. * WINDS...South 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. * RELATIVE HUMIDITY...As low as 9 percent. * LIGHTNING...Frequent cloud to ground lighting with little to no rainfall is expected. * IMPACTS...The combination of gusty winds, low relative humidity, and dry lightning would produce critical fire weather conditions.
